MDAs Invest N22.7 Billion in Solar Energy to Power Nigeria’s Future
ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has invested a total of N22,782,065,914.14 in solar power installations across the country in 2024.
The projects, aimed at enhancing rural electrification, street lighting, and infrastructure, were carried out under various contracts by Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Some of the key projects include the installation of solar streetlights in Kebbi, Kano, and other states by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, while the National Rural Electrification Agency focused on electrifying markets and rural areas.
The contracts were awarded at varying costs, ranging from N573 million to over N1.2 billion.
In addition, the government has announced the “Desert to Power” project, funded by $700 million from the African Development Bank, to harness northern Nigeria’s sunlight for renewable energy.
Solar360 media, learnt that critics have expressed concerns that despite these investments, Nigeria still lags behind global standards in renewable energy development.
Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, called for greater funding and stricter oversight to ensure the effective implementation of renewable energy projects in the country.
