Anambra State Shelves Awka Solar Street Light Project Over Cost Concerns
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has ordered the suspension of installation of Solar-powered street lights in Awka, the Anambra State capital over high cost of the project, which is to the tune of over #1 billion.
The decision was reached during the weekly State Executive Council meeting, about three companies were awarded the contract which was initially expected to be completed in three months.
While speaking to newsmen after the SEC meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, said the council extensively debated the memo for the installation of the solar-powered street lights and resolved that the unit cost was too high and required a downward review.
Solar360 gathered that the memo was stepped down and rescheduled for re-presentation at the next State Executive Council meeting, which will afford SEC members to review the contract award. According to him “This move is a prudent decision to ensure the project’s execution at a reasonable cost. The previous release incorrectly stated that the street light project had been awarded.
“The government regrets the mistake. The public will be updated on the project’s status once a decision is made”, Dr Mefor, assured.
