Tinubu Unveils Plan to Power Public Universities with Solar Energy
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to install solar panels in public universities nationwide to mitigate the financial burden of high electricity tariffs. This commitment was made during the University of Lagos’ 55th convocation ceremony, where Tinubu, represented by Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized his administration’s dedication to addressing tertiary institutions’ challenges.
Tinubu noted that education is crucial for national development, allocating N3.52 trillion to the education sector in the proposed 2025 Budget, dubbed the “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity.” This allocation demonstrates the administration’s resolve to stabilize the economy, improve lives, and secure Nigeria’s future.
To ensure financial constraints don’t hinder access to education, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund has been expanded, benefiting thousands of students. Systemic reforms are also being implemented to address tertiary education’s structural challenges, reflecting the government’s determination to revitalize the sector; Alausa said.
The solar panel initiative is a response to universities’ complaints about high electricity costs, aims to reduce operational costs, create a sustainable learning experience environment and promote energy efficiency. Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing initiatives that empower the education sector and position Nigeria for long-term success.
